Continuing with the Pen and Ink theme I present you with a Cumbrian artist who happens to have drawn some pictures of Lowther Castle and Gardens (mentioned below). Sophie Holme website is entitled Black and White daydreams which is fitting for the ink drawings she creates. They are simple silhouettes of children / families out and about exploring. Sophie originally trained as a doctor and after 12 years of hard work decided she wanted to take herself off the medical list as life seemed to be passing by all too quickly and become an artist. She has done many commissions and now has her art on merchandise for the Penrith Red Squirrel Group, Lowther Castle and Sizergh Castle in Cumbria. We both love the 'Walking home' drawing featured above. Here's her website now go and explore.
BEER in a CAN!
FourPure Brewing Co Session IPA.
It's an IPA but not the traditional swaying over the high seas Indian Pale Ale. It's the American influence in this can. Three lots of hops went in to this and I don't think they skimmed on the amount they put in the kettle either. As soon as it is poured from the can I can smell the hops. I thought at first maybe it was a bit too hoppy for me, think it maybe a grower in the hoppy stakes. However I think maybe the smell of the hops is fooling my mouth into thinking it's really hoppy. A 4.2% fruity, mild biscuity taste goes down nicely not over powering with tastes and is a good IPA session beer.
What to learn more about this London based family brewery? Here's a link to their website.
I recently found a Martyn Cornell blog via Boak and Bailey on Twitter, about IPA's which made for an interesting read
COVERED IN WEEDS
I should really get on with putting some seeds in this week, but the weather this week has been up and down, so I may leave it another week. I don't suppose anyone’s garden is doing much at the minute.
Think we may take a visit to Lowther Castle and Gardens this weekend. The Snowdrops were out a couple of weeks ago and we are hoping that the Daffodils they planted two years ago for a record breaking attempt are started to ping with bursts of yellow and white. This last year at the Castle there has been lots of developments, trees cut down, an Orchard planted, a parterre in front of the Castle created and general removal of weeds and debris. I wonder now how many plants that have been dormant for many years will all of a sudden spring in to life. I can't wait for them to do something with the 'Secret Garden' me and My Man found years ago, where I found my first Red cap mushroom and then another and another. The Head Gardener (his blog) there has one apprentice and a small army of volunteers and they have done wonders over the years. They can come to our very small garden if they like and do wonders here. Do you want to help with the restoration and the years of pleasure it would bring to a visitor and you? Sponsor a plant.
Is there a local attraction you like to go to on a regular basis to see the seasonal changes?
When was the last time you sent a letter to a friend? Was it at Christmas when you sent a card? Most of us don't bother with the old pen and paper, it's all about Social Media. Whilst it's good for meeting new people and finding old friends. There is nothing more exciting than getting a mail through the letter box, that isn't bills or advertising leaflets.
My first ever pen pal lived in Southampton at the time I was living in Sheffield. We meet on a train in 1995, she was heading to check out Leeds University and I was heading to Wakefield for my Pole Vault training session. Both of us where in our own little world with headphones on. The train ended up making a detour because of a derailed train which meant having to change trains. Think the conversation was started by Abi, and I know in there somewhere was “What are you listening too”? I replied “Suede” The response “Ugh, I can't stand Suede!” From then on we exchanged letters on a regular basis and the occasional mix tape, but, as we grew busier the letters became less frequent. We found one another on Facebook a number of years, she 'd decided to join the Social Media race. I'm glad she did as this is pretty much the only way we communicate now, snap shots of one another’s lives. But, this weekend I have decided that throughout this month I am going to send a postcard to my long distance friends, just to say Hello and put a smile on their face or a confused look of 'Why didn't she just Facebook me, well that's Linda strange to the end'. I'm going to keep the Postie in a job this month are you?
Are you still in touch with a Pen Pal? How long has it been and have you ever actually met?
Abi recently said it was Trees on the line, it was 1994 and she was visiting Bradford Uni. Ammended 21/03/2015
Tunes for the week have been inspired by my friend Abi. What I was listening to at the time of meeting her, Suede 'Moving'. And, the band she was into whom I had seen previous to meeting her after one of my training partners had been let down. Fantastic gig it was. The Little Angels 'Boneyard' . And I can't remember who introduced who to The Wildhearts 'Caffeine Bomb' an impressive song to sing to at karaoke and get right!
Have a good weekend, see you this time next week.

My nickname has nothing to do with any alcoholic measure. It is however all about a friend deciding one day whilst my hair was in plaits I looked like Laura Ingalls in 'The Little House on the Prairie'. She too was a Tomboy and a little short.
